Eleazar — His Hand Clung to the Sword | Mighty Men of the Bible
HE STOOD WHEN OTHERS WITHDREW.
Eleazar son of Dodo was one of the three mighty men who stood with David when Israel faced the Philistines.
As the enemy gathered for battle, the men of Israel withdrew. Eleazar did not. Scripture records that he arose and fought until his hand was weary and clung to his sword. The victory that followed was not credited merely to the endurance of a warrior:
“The LORD wrought a great victory that day.” — 2 Samuel 23:10 KJV
Eleazar’s account is brief, but its message is unmistakable. He remained at his post when retreat would have been easier. His exhausted hand gripping the sword became a picture of endurance—and the victory belonged to the Lord.
THE DESIGN
The distressed shield artwork depicts Eleazar standing on the battlefield with sword and shield in hand. Behind him are the signs of conflict; beneath him are the words that preserve his defining moment:
“His hand clave unto the sword; and the LORD wrought a great victory that day.”
The weathered tan, red, charcoal, and ivory palette gives the illustration the appearance of an aged military standard. Eleazar’s upward gaze and battle-worn stance emphasize steadfastness rather than triumphalism. He endured—but God brought the victory.
THE MESSAGE
Eleazar reminds us that faithfulness is often measured by what we continue to hold when our strength is nearly gone. Stand your ground. Hold fast to truth. Remain faithful at the post God has given you—and remember whose power ultimately brings the victory.
